The refuge will be closed for works in 2021
Reopening to the public hoped for early 2022
The Wallon-Marcadau refuge is completely closed to the public until mid-2022. The “commission syndicale de Saint-Savin”, owner of the refuge, has undertaken the complete rehabilitation of the building in order to accommodate hikers in a place that meets current standards. You can follow the works progression on the following website : www.csvss.fr/fr/les-travaux-au-marcadau
This mountain refuge is located in one of the most beautiful valleys in the Pyrenees. It is named after Edouard Wallon, a 19th century French Pyreneeist. Right on the HRP trail (High Pyrenean Route ), it offers access to the whole of this breathtaking area.
Access is easy, with practically no danger, even in winter. Located at the crossroads of 4 valleys, the refuge is the ideal starting point for many hikes: the Cambalès, Port du Marcadau and access to Panticosa, cross paths to the Ilhéou refuge via the Embarrat lakes, to the Oulettes de Gaube via Aratille and the Col des Mulets, to the Resposmuso refuge via the Col de la Fache, to the Bachimana refuge via the Port du Marcadau, and finally the Grande Fache, towering over the valley at 3005 m : easy mountaineering and aFranco-Spanish pilgrimage on 4th and 5th August.
As for the multitude of lakes around (29 !), the Fishing Federation makes sure these are restocked each year. A fishing paradise, if you add our three mountain streams.
Cross-country skiers also appreciate the valley, and the hut is open from 1st January.
The Wallon Marcadau refuge is owned by the Saint Savin Valley Commission.
Altitude : 1865 m
NB : During the season the “winter refuge“ is included in the refuge capacity. Dormitory accommodation will be charged for. However, a picnic room is still available to all. We cannot accommodate unaccompanied underage groups.
For 2019 the refuge is open from 1st february to November 1st.
